The European Commission has opened the LIFE calls for 2026, with a total budget of 601.5 million euros. The program finances companies, including SMEs, across four sub-programs, and the deadlines for most calls are in September 2026.
The calls opened on the Funding and Tenders portal on April 21, 2026, and the official announcement from CINEA, the agency managing the program, came the following day. The budget of 601.5 million euros makes LIFE one of the most substantial European programs directly accessible to firms.
The program is structured into four sub-programs: Nature and Biodiversity, Circular Economy and Quality of Life, Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation, and Clean Energy Transition. For companies, circular economy and energy transition are the most relevant.
Unlike many European programs, LIFE accepts a very wide range of beneficiaries: companies of any size, public authorities, universities, non-governmental organizations, and public-private partnerships. Funding rates are generally between 60% and 75% of eligible costs.
A practical advantage for Romanian firms is that LIFE also finances demonstration-type projects, meaning the implementation of a technical solution already validated, in a new context. Absolute scientific novelty is not required, but rather the demonstration of replicability and environmental impact.
Deadlines vary by topic. Most calls close on September 16 or 22, 2026, and Strategic Action Projects close on September 22. Interested firms must check the exact deadline for their target topic directly on the Commission's portal.
An element that differentiates LIFE from other European programs is project duration. Many calls finance projects for four or five years, with budgets that allow for hiring dedicated staff. For a firm, this means medium-term financial predictability, but also the obligation to sustain a constant administrative effort throughout the implementation period.
For Romanian companies in circular economy, recycling, water treatment, or energy efficiency, LIFE is likely the most accessible direct European source. Unlike Horizon Europe, scientific excellence is not required, and unlike structural funds, there are no regional restrictions or excluded CAEN (Classification of National Economic Activities) code lists. The central criterion remains measurable environmental impact and the replicability of the solution in other member states.
