EIC Accelerator 2026: up to 2.5 million euros grant plus 10 million equity investment for deep-tech start-ups

The European Innovation Council has opened the EIC Accelerator call for 2026, with a budget of approximately 634 million euros. This is the largest individual funding accessible to a start-up or SME in Romania, and the first-stage submission is continuous, with no deadline.

The EIC work program for 2026 was adopted by European Commission decision C(2025)7410 on November 5, 2025, and the call opened on the portal the following day. The total budget is split between the Open component, with 414 million euros, and the Challenges component, with 220 million euros, dedicated to predefined technological themes.

The funding structure is what differentiates EIC Accelerator from any other scheme. A company can receive up to 2.5 million euros in non-reimbursable grants for development activities, plus up to 10 million euros in equity investment through the EIC Fund, which effectively enters the shareholding. It is a tool designed for scaling, not for starting a business.

Eligibility is generous in appearance and restrictive in practice. Start-ups, SMEs, and small mid-caps with fewer than 499 employees from member states and associated states can apply. Application is individual, not as a consortium, which significantly simplifies the file compared to the rest of Horizon Europe. The real filter is quality: the success rate historically stands below 5%.

The process has three stages. Stage 1, the short proposal, is submitted continuously, with no deadline, and the result arrives in a few weeks. Those who pass submit the full proposal at one of the fixed deadlines. For 2026, these were March 4, May 6, and July 8, and the remaining ones are September 2 and November 4, 2026. Stage 3 is an interview before a jury.

For a Romanian company, the most useful advice is not to treat Stage 1 as a formality. It is the only stage that is free in terms of effort and the one that provides real feedback on the project's positioning at a European level before investing months of work into the full proposal.

One aspect that Romanian companies constantly underestimate is the market component of the file. EIC Accelerator is not a research program. Evaluators are, for the most part, investors and entrepreneurs, not academics, and the central question is not how innovative the technology is, but why someone would buy the product and how quickly the company can occupy a dominant position in the targeted segment.

The equity component raises a specific issue for entrepreneurs who have not worked with institutional investors before. The EIC Fund enters the shareholding with a minority stake, but with governance rights and the expectation of an exit in five to seven years. For a family business without fundraising experience, this structural change can be more difficult to manage than the technical project itself. It is worth evaluating in advance, with specialized legal advice.
